Laparoscopic Surgery
As a Paediatric Surgeon, Dr Singh’s goal is to treat children while avoiding discomfort wherever possible. One of the methods she uses is Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery.
Conditions treated with laparoscopic surgery
Dr Singh strives to use minimal techniques where possible, but this can’t always be achieved. That said, there are various conditions in which children can benefit significantly from laparoscopic surgery.
Appendicitis
When the appendix becomes infected, it’s known as appendicitis and can lead to severe pain, a fever, nausea, and other uncomfortable and deadly symptoms. If your child is experiencing these symptoms, it’s essential to take them to emergency care. Dr Singh performs laparoscopic surgery to remove the appendix and prevent future complications or more severe outcomes.Gallbladder problems
Gallstones or gallbladder inflammation is not as common in children, but can still occur and have dire impacts on their health and well-being. Gallstones are incredibly painful and difficult to remove, but through laparoscopic surgery, Dr Singh strives to restore your child’s health while being as minimally invasive as possible.Gallbladder problems
Gallstones or gallbladder inflammation can lead to pain and discomfort for your little one, but Dr Singh provides minimally invasive surgery to give them quick relief and treatment.Reflux and GORD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn and other uncomfortable symptoms. The procedure to correct GORD is known as Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication and is an extremely complicated procedure with several risks involved. With laparoscopic surgery, we aim to strengthen the muscle that separates the stomach and oesophagus to alleviate reflux.
Laparoscopic surgery procedure
Laparoscopic surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. This ensures your child is completely asleep and at ease for the treatment. Dr Singh will perform the surgery using a small incision technique and special instruments.
The laparoscope is a thin, lighted tube with a camera that allows Dr Singh to see into the abdomen and operate. After surgery, your child will be taken to a recovery room, where they are monitored until they are fully awake and alert.
Most children can go home within a day or two after surgery and typically return to normal activities within a week or two.
The benefits of laparoscopic surgery
Laparoscopic surgery is a modern surgical technique that offers many benefits for children. Advantages of this minimally invasive technique include:
Faster recovery time
Less pain and discomfort
Minimal scarring with better results
