Hernias

A hernia is when an organ or tissue bulges out of its usual location in the body. Hernias can occur in many different parts of the body, including the abdominal area, the groin and the belly button.

Children can develop hernias just like adults, but the causes of hernias are different, and for this reason, they require extra special medical attention to prevent complications.

Types of hernias in children

Hernias in children can be a concerning and even frightening experience for parents. However, with Dr Singh’s expertise, you can rest easy knowing their child is in good hands.

Dr Singh and her team are specially trained to treat various types of hernias in children, providing the best possible care and results for young patients. The most common types of hernias that children and babies experience are inguinal (groin) and umbilical (belly button) hernias.

  • Inguinal – cause a small bulge in the groin area.

  • Umbilical – occur where the umbilical cord was once attached to the belly button.

Diagnosing hernias

Dr Singh will perform a physical exam to check for signs of a hernia. She may also use ultrasound or other imaging tests to get a clearer picture of the hernia and its location.

Signs to look out for include:

  • Swelling or a bulge in the abdomen or groin area

  • Pain or discomfort in the affected area

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Difficulty passing stool or gas

  • A noticeable lump

Treatment for hernias

In some cases, Dr Singh may recommend a watchful waiting approach to see if the hernia resolves independently. This approach is often used for umbilical hernias that are small and not causing any symptoms.

However, surgery may be necessary if the hernia is causing issues or is at risk of becoming strangulated. Dr Singh will then use minimally-invasive techniques to remove the hernia, allowing for better recovery.
